GIFT charity
GIFT CharityIn the early evening of 19 June, 20 people met at Heathrow Airport in readiness of their flight to Tanzania. All 20 had signed up for the challenge of a lifetime: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for GIFT. It was an eclectic group ranging from ages 16-53. Over five extraordinary days, participants supported each other all the way to the summit.
R’ Sandor Milun, Managing Director of GIFT, noted, “This is a magical mountain, that can bring out the best, and worst in people. Our UK guide has consistently said she had never witnessed a group become so close, so bonded and united as we did. She could not believe that most people did not know each other before we arrived at the airport! The entire experience is unforgettable and for many, it was life defining, as people realised how much more they are able to achieve.”
The group walked, talked, sang and entertained each other as they hiked, supporting each other through moments of darkness, rain, seemingly endless paths and cold. Despite the challenges, and the moments of self-doubt, the kindness and altruism kept the team on the move.
Shabbat came as a much-needed day of rest, as recalled by participant, Gavriel Sacks: “That Shabbat was the best Shabbat of my life, will never be topped! Good spirit and attitude, we all vibed, we all had fun and we all connected with the land around us.”
The final push for the summit started late at night; after seven grueling hours of walking in -10°C weather at high altitude, the whole group reached the peak, all within 20 minutes of each other, an unheard-of team effort. As head guide Jonas Rutto commented, ‘You guys are pretty resilient’.
“Climbing Kilimanjaro was the most fantastic adventure, especially since Anzia and I could do it together as a couple. This would not have been possible without the phenomenal support of GIFT and its Managing Director, Sandor Milun.” Paul Charney, Managing Director of Landhold Capital Group of Companies
Through participants' committed fundraising, over £115,000 was raised to support GIFT’s work, inspiring and enabling giving while helping those in the community in need. To sign up for GIFT Kilimanjaro 24’, or to get involved with GIFT’s work, email info@jgift.org.
