Sir Quentin Blake GIFTs his art for the NHS23/06/20
After successfully spearheading the GIFT NHS-OS initiative, encouraging and facilitating food and beauty brands to donate over 36,000 products which were distributed to NHS hospitals, care homes & hospices across London; Howard and Beverly Calvert felt they wanted to do more.
A donor approached GIFT with a large quantity of mugs to donate to the GIFT NHS-OS project, these were not suitable to give to NHS staff but the mugs had given the creative Beverly an idea. She approached famous artist Sir Quentin Blake and asked if he would be willing to design mugs for the NHS Charities Together, the same charity that Captain Tom raised money for.
Sir Quentin was quick to agree and created 3 different designs for the mugs and even put the Calverts in touch with his printing company in Scotland who agreed to print these mugs at cost price. The Calverts reached out to the popular lifestyle brand 'Skinny Dip London' owned by 3 former Immanuel College boys, and they agreed to use their platform to sell these mugs whilst donating 100% of the profits to NHS Charities Together; as did Ready10 media, a PR company also offering their services for free.
Beverley Calvert of NHS-OS said: “As lockdown eases, and many return to work, what better way to show our friends and colleagues that we supported the NHS, than by toasting them with a cup of tea or coffee each and every day, and with that iconic symbol on the side of our mug for all to see, knowing we donated in solidarity.”
Ellie Orton, CEO of NHS Charities Together said, “I grew up with Roald Dahl and Sir
Quentin’s illustrations and I love these mugs to bits, so this is an incredible fundraising initiative. You get to own a lovely piece of art and raise money to support NHS staff, volunteers and patients at the same time. Buy one as a thank you for someone who has been there for you during the pandemic, then join the rest of the nation for a collective moment of thanks on the NHS’s birthday on Sunday 5 July.”
GIFT’s Shira Joseph said “It has been a privilege and a pleasure working together with the Calverts on the incredible NHS-OS initiative.
They are a true example of a couple who not only had a big idea, but they did all it took to make it happen! It has been great to be a part of a big fundraising initiative for the NHS from within the Jewish Community.”
