As part of Hampstead Garden Suburb Synagogue’s Bar Mitzvah programme, Rabbi Guttentag together with Youth Leader, Ethan Genende, brought 30 boys to GIFT’s Giving Hub for an opportunity to help the 250 households that GIFT support each week. The lively session engaged the boy’s hearts and minds with a mix of inspiring stories about giving and the positive impact to both giver and beneficiary whilst spending time volunteering packing fruit and vegetables.

Rabbi Guttentag of HGSS said ‘The boys had a great time getting involved with GIFT’s packathon, helping organise food parcels. They heard from Michelle Barnett, GIFT’s Founding Director about how charities help the community. The combination of interactive discussion and hands-on volunteering is an essential part of their pre-bar mitzvah education’.

Michelle commented ‘B’nei Mitzvah marks a very special change in our children’s lives as they transition from childhood to young adulthood. At this time of life, developing a deeper awareness and understanding about the community and the life challenges with which many individuals and families suffer, can make a huge difference to the fundamental way in which young adults engage with the community for the rest of their lives’.

GIFT’s own B’nei Mitzvah programme offers a variety of options, from working together to create a charity project to having a 'giving' stand at a celebration to collecting and packing food for those in need. Visit www.jgift.org to find out more.
